What is a BYE Round?
In the event of a TIE...
We take the highest score from the THIRD ROUND, which typically has the hardest questions, in order to break that tie. For example, if two teams tie for second place overall, we look at each team's third round scores. Whichever team scored the MOST POINTS IN THE THIRD ROUND will be awarded second place and the other team would be in third place. If it would happen that both teams have a tie in the third round, we would look at the second round and so on....

QUESTIONS YOU MAY STILL HAVE
How long is the reading competition? What should I expect?
- We hope to start each competition by 3:30 PM. However, please be aware that some of our teams are traveling a significant distance and some of our readers/ scorekeepers are teachers and are leaving their elementary classrooms before the school day ends. These factors may delay the start to Round 1. All teams report to the main lobby of Floyd C. Fretz Middle School where Missy Cornelius (School Street Librarian) and I will be to give each team a folder of room assignments, a team score card, and we will answer any questions you may still have.
- Once there are two teams in a room and it is 3:30, Round 1 may begin.
- During the competition, Missy and I are centrally located in front of the library to answer any questions and keep score of team points.
- There are three rounds of competition, which usually wrap up between 5:15- 5:30 PM. Teams then head to the cafeteria (elementary) and the Large Group Instructional Room (secondary) for an awards ceremony.
- The competition is usually done by 5:45 PM.
Can we bring food?
- YES! Schools may bring food to the competition since it is an incredible long day. Coolers and food items may be stored in the cafeteria or in the Large Group Instructional Room (LGI). Snacks may be eater PRIOR to the start of each round. Water bottles are permitted on the desks during the competition as long as they do not become a distraction. No food can be consumed DURING a round. Please be respectful of the teachers' rooms and be sure your students pick up all trash and dispose of it accordingly.
- There will be a lull/break during the final tabulations and awards ceremony. Each student will be given a small snack and water on his/her way to the cafeteria (elementary teams) and Large Group Instructional Room (secondary students). This would be an ideal time to eat and relax. Some teams even order pizza. A good delivery time is 5:15-5:30. PLEASE NOTE: Some delivery personnel are no longer coming into the school. Please make arrangements to have someone in the main lobby for pick up.
- The competition has three (3) rounds--For elementary teams, there are 40 questions per round; 20 questions per team. For middle and high school teams, there are 30 questions per round; 15 questions per team.
- Each team needs to appoint a captain or speaker for the team. Remember teams can only play with a maximum of 12 members. The team captain or speaker is the person who will give the responses to the moderator/reader. The captain or speaker may appoint another team member to speak during the competition if he/she feels that team member will answer the question better.
- The questions consist of book titles, basic plot events, and characters. The questions are comparable to Accelerated Reader questions.
- Example of a Question: Team A will be asked a question. They will have 20 seconds to confer. If they get it right, then they receive a point. If they get it wrong, no points are deducted but Team B has a chance to "steal" the question. Team B has no time to confer--both teams must confer during that initial 20 seconds; they must answer it right away. If Team B answers it correctly, they receive the point for that question and will be given their question to continue with the round.
- Points are not deducted for wrong answers or for no answers given. Points are only deducted for arguing and/or disruptive behavior by teams.
- No. We have decided that the competition focus is best for the students and readers/score keepers by limiting parents/ guardians/ families.
- Families are invited to the Awards Ceremony. This takes place in the Cafeteria for Elementary teams; in the Large Group Instructional Room for Middle and High School Teams. The ceremony usually takes place between 5:15-PM-5:30PM.
Challenged Questions
- Students may challenge an answer before the next question in that round is asked. Questions are not to be discarded just because a team has not read the book, does not know the answer, or simply wishes to keep the opposing team from getting the point. The team that received the disputed question first should be asked the challenge question first. Teams are not permitted more than two challenges per round.
- A moderator can also "throw out" a question if the wording is confusing or if he/she has made an error when reading the question. The moderator would simply choose another question from the "Extra Questions" pile.
What is a BYE Round?
- If there is an even number of teams, each team will compete in three rounds of competition. If there is an odd number of teams’ competing, there will be three teams competing in two rounds only. Those teams with a "bye" round will have their total score determined by averaging their scores for the other two rounds and using that average as the score for their "bye" round. Teams with "byes" are chosen at random.
- We understand that some teams have had more bye rounds in the overall competition itself. We try to eliminate repeated bye rounds the best that we can. However, it simply depends on the number of teams in each grade-level.
- If your team does have a bye round and is sent to the library to relax, PLEASE keep them together seated at the tables or couches. No running, grabbing books, or horseplay will be permitted. We are happy to provide a space to relax between rounds; we just need your help to keep control and keep the library as neat as your team found it. Thanks for your understanding!
